How to Unenroll Contacts from a Sequence

Unenrolling a contact stops their remaining sequence outreach. Use this when a prospect replies, books a meeting, asks not to be contacted, or should no longer receive the planned follow-ups.

When should you unenroll a contact?

Unenroll a contact when:

  • They reply and the next step should be a personal conversation instead of automated follow-up.
  • They book a meeting and continued outreach is no longer appropriate.
  • They ask you to stop contacting them.
  • Their circumstances change and the sequence is no longer relevant.
  • They were enrolled by mistake or in the wrong sequence.

Important: If someone asks not to receive further marketing or sales outreach, follow Farther's applicable opt-out and contact-preference process as well. Unenrolling from a sequence is not necessarily the same as updating their subscription or consent status.

Option A: Unenroll one contact
  1. In HubSpot, go to CRM > Contacts.
  2. Search for and open the contact.
  3. Find the sequence activity or enrollment information on the contact record.
  4. Open the sequence actions or enrollment menu.
  5. Select Unenroll or the equivalent option shown in your HubSpot view.
  6. Confirm the action if prompted.
  7. Review the contact's activity timeline to verify the enrollment has stopped.
Option B: Unenroll contacts from a sequence

If you need to stop outreach to several contacts:

  1. Go to Sales > Sequences.
  2. Open the Manage tab.
  3. Select the relevant sequence.
  4. Open the Enrollments section or tab.
  5. Find and select the contacts you need to unenroll.
  6. Choose Unenroll and confirm the action if prompted.
  7. Verify the selected contacts are no longer actively enrolled.

Review your selection carefully before confirming a bulk action.

What happens after unenrollment?

  • HubSpot stops the contact's remaining sequence steps.
  • Emails that have already been sent cannot be recalled.
  • Unenrollment does not automatically delete the contact record.
  • If you need to contact the person again later, review the contact's history and confirm that further outreach is appropriate before enrolling them again.

Troubleshooting

I cannot find the Unenroll option.
Open the contact record and look for the active sequence enrollment or its actions menu. You can also check the sequence's enrollment list.

The contact replied, but the sequence is still active.
Check the sequence's automatic unenrollment settings. If the contact should no longer receive follow-ups, manually unenroll them when appropriate.

The contact was already sent an email.
Unenrollment stops future sequence steps; it does not undo emails already sent.
